Anxious About the Cost of Oral Surgery?

Relax... We've Got You Covered

We can't offer you medication to ease your anxiety over procedure costs, but we can do the next best thing: offering you a financing option. Some procedures are only partially covered, or not covered at all by insurance, possibly saddling you with significant out-of-pocket fees. So you can receive the oral surgery you need regardless of your budget, we accept CareCredit® financing. This third-party lender allows you to make monthly payments toward your care.

Keeping You Safe and Comfortable With Sedation

Advanced Oral Surgery of Tampa offers a full range of sedation options tailored to each patient’s medical history and procedure type. Our providers, many of whom are double board-certified, prioritize safety and precision. We ensure anesthesia is delivered predictably and comfortably to make your surgical experience as smooth as possible.

Types of Sedation

Depending on the dentistry procedure being performed and each individual's particular oral health needs, our experienced dentists can provide a variety of sedation options to enable relaxation and lessen any fears they may have about their appointment. Anesthesia is safely administered by our fully certified and extraordinarily well-trained team of dental professionals.

Oral Sedation

When moderate sedation is required, oral conscious sedation is an excellent choice. This prescription medication is taken before your appointment to provide you with an added layer of relaxation.

Modern dental sedatives not only help with a sense of calm but can also reduce your sense of pain. However, you should have someone standing by to drive you home from your appointment, as you may feel a bit groggy after the procedure.

IV Sedation

The sedative medications we administer via an IV effectively reduce any pain or anxiety while receiving dental care at Advanced Oral Surgery of Tampa. IV sedation is often a helpful option for patients with a strong gag reflex, extreme dental sensitivity, or widespread oral health issues.

Although it does not put you to sleep, this form of "twilight" sedation leaves you relaxed during your appointment and without any memory of it afterward. As a result, IV sedation can be enormously beneficial for patients with acute anxiety who have major dental health issues by allowing them to drastically improve their dental health.

Sedation Can Help Patients With Special Considerations

Sensitive Gag Reflex

Oral surgery can require the use of several tools at once. If you have a sensitive gag reflex, your procedure may become uncomfortable. Various forms of sedation can minimize this response for a more comfortable treatment experience.

Trouble Sitting Still

Patients with Parkinson's disease, ADHD, arthritis, and other special considerations can find sitting still difficult. Even general dental appointments can take a while, let alone an oral surgery procedure. Sedation can help calm your body and mind to help you sit still.

Long Procedures

The procedures we perform at our oral surgery practice are more complex than your typical filling or general dental checkup. Treatments may run longer than you're used to, making sedation a great tool to help you relax throughout your procedure.

Dental Anxiety

If you've had a bad dental experience in the past or have never enjoyed going to the dentist, we understand. Sedation can help you relax and get the care you need if dental anxiety has previously held you back from receiving dental treatments.

Special Note for Patients Using Diabetes Medications Stop Using Certain Medications 1 Week Prior to Surgery

Certain medications that control type 2 diabetes and aid in weight loss may cause adverse effects when taken around the time a patient receives anesthesia or other drugs used during surgery. There is a possibility that these drugs may interfere with anesthesia, cause blood clotting, or complicate the surgery. These medications include:

  • Dulaglutide
  • Ozempic®
  • RYBELSUS®
  • Trulicity®
  • Wegovy®

The American Society of Anesthesiologists recommends withholding the use of these medications and other glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists for one week prior to surgery. Patients can resume taking them one day after surgery. To help us ensure safe treatment, tell your care team about any medications you are taking.

Preparation

If you are undergoing any sedation during your visit, you will need to arrange a ride to and from your appointment. If you are undergoing IV sedation, you will need to fast beforehand to minimize any post-procedural nausea. If you are taking an oral sedative, you must take it at the prescribed time before your appointment.

Administration

Once you are settled and comfortable, Dr. Jason Edwards, Thomas Backeris, Jason Blundell, or Pat Gaus will administer a local anesthetic to block pain or IV sedation if that was your chosen method. The timing of your medication for oral sedation will be accounted for before your procedure begins.

Treatment

Performing oral surgery while you are under sedation allows our oral surgeons to provide the necessary care to maximize your dental health. Because we can work longer without causing undue anxiety, we can often take care of multiple procedures in a single appointment if needed. If we are performing only one procedure, it can usually be completed in a shorter amount of time due to our patient being relaxed.

Recovery

You will need to remain in the office for the medication to wear off a bit before you can leave. You will also need someone to drive you home safely, so please coordinate this with a friend or family member. You will be provided with explicit post-procedure instructions as well, which may include bed rest for the remainder of the day.

Dental phobia generally stems from a bad experience at the dentist in the past. With sedation, patients can rewrite those memories so that they can overcome their fears. Our compassionate team of dental care professionals will do everything they can to make you feel welcome, comfortable, and relaxed.

Untreated Oral Health Problems Can Be Dangerous

Fear of the dentist keeps a good number of patients from receiving the dental care they desperately need. Even worse, allowing the health of your gums and teeth to decline can have an adverse effect on your general health as well. Studies have shown a link between periodontal disease and heart disease, among other serious health issues. Don't let fear of the dentist impact your overall well-being. Sedation oral surgery at our offices in Tampa, Land O' Lakes, Wesley Chapel, and Valrico, FL, can make dental work virtually free of discomfort and anxiety.

Regular dental care is essential to a healthy smile. With sedation oral surgery, patients find it possible to receive the treatment they need to maintain their dental health without feeling overwhelmed by anxiety. In time, you may no longer fear the dentist at all.
