Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety can cause you to avoid important trips to the dentist, compromising both your oral health and the appearance of your smile.

Sedation dentistry allows you to receive the treatment you need while helping you stay calm and relaxed in the dentist's chair.

Advanced Oral Surgery of Tampa uses sedation to help provide Tampa, Valrico, and Land O' Lakes, FL, with personalized care.

If You Experience Anxiety About Seeing the Dentist... You Are Not Alone

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Depending on the dentistry procedure being performed and each individual's particular oral health needs, our experienced dentists can provide a variety of sedation options to enable relaxation and lessen any fears they may have about their appointment. Anesthesia is safely administered by our fully certified and extraordinarily well-trained team of dental professionals.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide gas is a form of light sedation that leaves patients in a state of relaxation. Administered by placing a mask over your nose, nitrous oxide sedation is easily controlled and wears off quickly. As a result, it is the only form of sedation where you may drive yourself home following your appointment.

Because it is so safe and easy to control, nitrous oxide is often used for children who suffer from dental anxiety. Commonly known as "laughing gas," it might even cause a giggle or two.

Oral Sedation

When moderate sedation is required, oral conscious sedation is an excellent choice. This prescription medication is taken before a procedure to provide you with an added layer of relaxation. A sedative medication taken before arriving at your dental appointment can help reduce anxiety, especially in patients who have a fear of the dentist.

Modern dental sedatives not only help with a sense of calm but can also reduce your sense of pain. However, you should have someone standing by to drive you home from your appointment, as you may feel a bit groggy after the procedure.

IV Sedation

The sedative medications we administer via an IV effectively reduce any pain or anxiety while receiving dental care at Advanced Oral Surgery of Tampa. IV sedation is often a helpful option for patients with a strong gag reflex, extreme dental sensitivity, or widespread oral health issues.

Although it does not put you to sleep, this form of "twilight" sedation dentistry leaves you relaxed during your appointment and without any memory of it afterward. As a result, IV sedation can be enormously beneficial for patients with acute anxiety who have major dental health issues by allowing them to drastically improve their dental health.

My visit here was great, from start to finish. They explained everything that was going to happen with my daughter and made us as comfortable as they can. The nurse even came out to give me an update on the progress and let me know she was doing great. Thank you to the doctor and staff for being awesome!

Sedation Can Help Patients With Special Considerations

Sensitive Gag Reflex

Oral surgery can require the use of several tools at once. If you have a sensitive gag reflex, your procedure may become uncomfortable. Various forms of sedation can minimize this response for a more comfortable treatment experience.

Trouble Sitting Still

Patients with Parkinson's disease, ADHD, arthritis, and other special considerations can find sitting still difficult. Even general dental appointments can take a while, let alone an oral surgery procedure. Sedation can help calm your body and mind to help you sit still.

Long Procedures

The procedures we perform at our oral surgery practice are more complex than your typical filling or general dental checkup. Treatments may run longer than you're used to, making sedation a great tool to help you relax throughout your procedure.

Dental Anxiety

If you've had a bad dental experience in the past or have never enjoyed going to the dentist, we understand. Sedation dentistry can help you relax and get the care you need if dental anxiety has previously held you back from receiving dental treatments.

Receive Worry-Free Sedation From Our Certified Anesthesia Team

We value safe, comfortable, and high-quality treatment, which is why all our team members are fully trained and certified in administering anesthesia. We will work with you to determine the correct type of anesthesia for your comfort level, budget, and the complexity of your procedure. For a worry-free appointment met with friendly faces and quality care, request a consultation at one of our dental practices in the Tampa area:

Dr Jason Edwards and his team was awesome! They are professional, nice and made me feel at ease. I had tooth implant surgery on tooth #12 (which is almost to the front) and they were able to extract my tooth, do some bone grafting and insert the post all in one procedure.

The Steps of Sedation Dentistry

Our team of professionals can ease your discomfort and anxiety with the help of safe and effective sedation dentistry.
Our team of professionals can ease your discomfort and anxiety with the help of safe and effective sedation dentistry.

Preparation

If you are undergoing moderate to deep sedation during your visit, you will need to arrange a ride to and from our Tampa, FL, dental surgery office. If you are undergoing IV sedation, you will need to fast beforehand to minimize any post-procedural nausea. If you are taking an oral sedative, you must take it at a prescribed time before your appointment.

Administration

Once you are settled and comfortable, our doctor will provide the chosen method of sedation dentistry before your dentistry treatment begins. For nitrous oxide sedation, you will be fitted with a nose mask. The timing of your medication for oral sedation will be accounted for before your procedure begins. Heavy sedation will require an IV placed by a member of our experienced team of professionals.

Treatment

Performing dentistry treatments while you are under sedation allows our oral surgeons to provide the necessary care to maximize your dental health. Because we can work longer without causing undue anxiety, we can often take care of multiple procedures in a single appointment. If we are performing only one procedure, it can usually be completed in a shorter amount of time due to our patient being calm and free of anxiety.

Recovery

The sedative properties of nitrous oxide go away nearly as soon as the mask is removed from your nose. For heavier forms of sedation dentistry, you will need to remain in the office for the medication to wear off a bit before you can leave. You will also need someone to drive you home safely, so please coordinate this with a friend or family member. It is recommended that you rest at home for the remainder of the day following moderate to heavy dental sedation at our Tampa, FL, oral surgery practice. Most of our patients will have little or no memory of their appointment. You will be provided with explicit post-procedure instructions as well.

Amazing, took the time to explain everything in full and even sprayed my son with freeze spray to assure him the IV won't hurt. We got an appointment really fast and the wait time was very fast. I've already recommended them to friends after only 1 visit.

Restore the Health of Your Smile with Sedation Dentistry

Fear of the dentist keeps a good number of patients from receiving the dental care they desperately need. Even worse, allowing the health of your gums and teeth to decline can have an adverse effect on your general health as well. Studies have shown a link between periodontal disease and heart disease, among other serious health issues. Don't let fear of the dentist impact your overall well-being. Sedation dentistry at our oral surgery practice, serving Tampa, Valrico, and Land O' Lakes, FL, can make dental work virtually free of discomfort and anxiety.

Graphic demonstrating how oral health impacts cardiac health

Regular dental care is essential to a healthy smile. With sedation dentistry, patients find it possible to receive the treatment they need to maintain their dental health without feeling overwhelmed by anxiety. As patients begin to enjoy these benefits, they generally have a more positive association with the dentist. In some cases, this lays the groundwork for receiving dental treatment without sedation dentistry to help them relax.

Sedation dentistry and its many forms combined with local anesthesia can relieve your anxiety about what you are thinking could be a painful or uncomfortable visit. Although it rarely induces unconsciousness, sedation can allow you to remain in a state of deep relaxation during most procedures. Depending on the dental procedure being performed at our oral surgery center, serving the communities of Tampa, Valrico, and Land O' Lakes, FL, our oral surgeons will work with your dentist and may recommend nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or intravenous (IV) sedation.

Dental phobia generally stems from a bad experience at the dentist in the past. With these available options, patients can rewrite those memories so that they can overcome their fears. Our compassionate team of dental care professionals will do everything they can to make you feel welcome, comfortable, and relaxed.

Went in today to have 2 wisdom teeth out. Everyone was so sweet and kind. Was given stuff to take before the surgery that relaxed me. I didn't feel the IV go in and I don't remember going under. I don't remember anything aside from getting home. No pain several hours after surgery. Given stuff to take for pain.

My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed on Friday and only had minimal pain. The entire process was very easy and informative. They have a multitude of sedation options which was appreciated. Dr. Edwards took extra time with my daughter to explain the entire procedure and put her at ease. She woke up from IV sedation and told me on the way home that she didn't think they did the procedure as she couldn't feel a thing. I would not hesitate to refer neighbors or friends to this office.

FAQ About Sedation

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

Anyone who needs a dental procedure to restore their oral health can benefit from sedation. Whether you have a child who is afraid to undergo dental work or a grandparent who has trouble sitting for extended periods, sedation dentistry can help them through the process of restoring their oral health and function with comfort and peace of mind.

Who is sedation appropriate for?

Sedation can make dental procedures a more comfortable experience for patients who have feelings of anxiety around the dentist, a low pain threshold, sensitive teeth, a bad gag reflex, or trouble sitting still. Additionally, anyone who needs to undergo many procedures or a lengthy procedure can benefit from sedation.

Will I experience side effects?

After receiving sedation dentistry, you may experience a headache and feel drowsy, nauseous, or heavy. Side effects typically go away quickly.

Is it safe to undergo sedation?

Sedation dentistry is safe for most patients, especially when administered by dental professionals like Drs. Edwards and Backeris, who both have a wealth of experience in the field. However, if you are obese or have obstructive sleep apnea, you should talk to your doctor about whether sedation is safe for you before moving forward.

Why should I choose you for my procedure?

Our oral surgeons are affiliated with the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the Florida Dental Society of Anesthesiology. These professional associations are resources for our doctors to continue their education, advance how sedation is used in the field of dentistry, and provide safe office-based sedation and general anesthesia to patients.
